Norwich City has moved to expand its community offerings by proposing the construction of three padel courts at The Nest, its dedicated community hub in Horsford. The project marks the club’s entry into the fast-growing world of padel, a sport that blends elements of tennis and squash in a doubles format ideal for recreational play.
The Nest’s development enters new phase
The new courts—two covered and one outdoor—are included in Phase 4 of The Nest’s broader development plan. This facility has become a cornerstone for accessible sport in the region, and the padel addition is intended to further this mission. The club emphasizes that the courts will be open to all, removing barriers to participation and welcoming people from diverse backgrounds and ability levels.
Widening participation and community impact
Norwich City’s proposals go beyond simple court construction. They include the addition of social amenities such as indoor viewing areas, racket rental, outdoor table tennis, vending stations, and changing facilities. With the capacity to host 800 users per week and attract over 40,000 visitors annually, the initiative is geared toward creating a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere.
Programming designed for all demographics
A range of specially tailored sessions will be introduced to ensure the padel facilities serve varied community needs. This includes coaching for individuals with disabilities, weekly programs for children, older adults with limited activity, those facing mental health challenges, and subsidized access for underrepresented groups. Holiday camps and inclusive tournaments will also be part of the plan.
“The expansion of padel courts at The Nest represents a bold investment in health, inclusion and opportunity,” commented Jackie Thornton, Director of Strategy and Development.
“We are constantly evolving The Nest with the view to reduce isolation, support mental wellbeing, promote physical activity, and offer a safe, inspiring space for people of all ages and backgrounds.”
Youth involvement at the heart of future growth
The Norwich City Foundation’s Youth Voice Council will co-develop programs that engage young people and address wider social issues. This approach aligns with the club’s goal to use sport as a tool for empowerment and connection.
Strategic vision supports mental health and wellbeing
Jackie Thornton, Director of Strategy and Development, explained that the project aims to enhance wellbeing and fight isolation through physical activity and social engagement. The initiative is being pitched as a bold and progressive step in Norwich City’s ongoing efforts to evolve The Nest into a dynamic center for community life.
Planning and stakeholder engagement underway
With planning permission now submitted, the club is seeking backing from funders and stakeholders to bring the project to life. If successful, Norwich City will join other leading clubs such as Notts County, Liverpool, Manchester City, Brentford, Brighton, and Mansfield Town in integrating padel into their infrastructure.
