Coello and Tapia skip Newgiza again, while Chingotto and Galan are in

Following the cancellation of the Qatar Major due to instability in the region, Premier Padel’s attention has shifted to the P2 tournament in Newgiza. Yet the closing of registration for the Egyptian event has revealed a surprising development: Arturo Coello and Agustín Tapia are not on the entry list. This marks the third consecutive year that the world number ones have chosen to skip this tournament, adding intrigue to the race for the top ranking.

Strategic absences

This situation is not new for the Valladolid native and the Catamarca native. In 2024, with the number one ranking already secured, their absence was a strategic decision. In 2025, however, the risk was greater, as Ale Galán and Fede Chingotto were close behind. Their absence in Egypt could have cost them, but they managed to protect their position later in Mexico. This year, despite holding a strong lead after Cancún, they have once again opted for rest, opening the door for Galán and Chingotto, who registered at the last minute.

Opportunity for rivals

The absence of the top seeds makes Newgiza an enticing opportunity. Mike Yanguas and Franco Stupaczuk, who won here in 2024, are strong contenders. Juan Lebrón and Alex Augsburger are also aiming for their first title as a pair, while Coki Nieto and Jon Sanz see a clear chance to make their mark. In the women’s draw, however, all the top-seeded pairs are confirmed, ensuring no shortage of competition.

New partnerships debut

Newgiza will also showcase the first major reshuffling of the season. While in Miami players are still competing with former teammates due to early registration deadlines, Egypt will reveal new pairings. Sanyo Gutiérrez begins his partnership with Víctor Ruiz, aiming for consistency after his split with Gonza Alfonso. Alfonso will now team up with Javi Barahona. Young José Jiménez joins forces with Javi García, while Maxi Sánchez Blasco partners with José García Diestro. David Gala will play alongside Íñigo Jofre, and Pablo García will switch sides to team up with veteran Álvaro Cepero.

The Egyptian tournament promises to be a testing ground for these new duos, setting the tone for the second half of the season and reshaping the competitive landscape of Premier Padel.
