Ibstock Place School in Roehampton has submitted plans to build three padel courts on its existing playing fields. The project aims to benefit students, the University of Roehampton, and the wider community by opening the facilities to public use.
Growing popularity of padel
Padel, a racquet sport typically played in doubles on enclosed courts about one-third the size of a tennis court, has been described as the fastest-growing sport worldwide. Planning documents highlight the demand for the game in London, noting that the new courts would help meet this need.
Accessibility and booking
The proposed courts would be surrounded by a security fence and accessed through a gate. Paths and level surfaces would ensure wheelchair-friendly access. Bookings would be managed online, with the courts available daily from 8am to 10pm.
Demand and participation
The planning documents stated: “There is currently significant unmet demand for padel across London and this project offers an exciting opportunity to introduce a new, accessible sport for the school pupils, The University of Roehampton and the entire community to enjoy.” they said. They also noted: “The proposal will improve participation in the use of recreational facilities through the introduction of a development which creates space for a sporting activity.” the documents commented.
The school hopes to begin construction by summer if Wandsworth Council approves the plans.
