Ovechkin keeps fit with padel as decision looms

Alex Ovechkin, 40 years old and a future Hall of Famer, is facing a crucial choice as his five-year contract with the Washington Capitals expires on July 1. After completing his 21st NHL season with 32 goals in 82 games, he must decide whether to continue his career or hang up his skates.

Staying in shape back home

Since returning to Russia last week, Ovechkin has been photographed several times working out and playing padel, a sport that combines elements of tennis and squash. He has shared the court with his wife Nastya Ovechkina, television presenter Ksenia Borodina, businessman Maxim Kazantsev, and professional hockey player Stanislav Ishchenko. In each photo, Ovechkin is seen wearing a navy blue Capitals hat, a subtle reminder of his enduring connection to Washington.

Words from Ovechkin

During his Breakdown Day interview, Ovechkin admitted he is leaning toward continuing: “Sono abbastanza sicuro di non aver giocato la mia ultima partita, ma ci sono delle condizioni per un possibile ritorno,” ha detto. He explained that making the playoffs and fighting for the Stanley Cup would be essential. “Ovviamente, se voglio tornare, deve essere una decisione. Prima di tutto, dobbiamo andare ai playoff e lottare per la Coppa. Questo è probabilmente l’aspetto più importante per me.”

Training dedication at 40

Ovechkin also reflected on the demands of staying competitive at his age: “Dipende da me, da come gestirò il mio corpo, da come mi allenerò. In estate devi lavorare duramente per restare in forma. A vent’anni è normale, ma a quarant’anni diventa sempre più difficile ogni anno.” He mentioned consulting with his personal trainer Pavel to prepare for whatever decision comes next.

Teammates and management weigh in

Former teammate TJ Oshie expressed confidence that Ovechkin will return, while current teammate Aliaksei Protas suggested he could play until 50 if he wanted. Capitals management has stated publicly that the decision will rest entirely with Ovechkin.

Records still within reach

If he chooses to continue, Ovechkin has one major milestone ahead: with 1,006 combined regular-season and playoff goals, he is just 10 behind Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record of 1,016. That chase alone could provide the motivation for one more season.
